Dear readers,
I just got back from the 36th annual Women in Aviation International conference in Denver. I know you are looking forward to seeing the who’s-who edition in Aero Crew News, but unfortunately, we’re up against deadline so that will have to wait until our May issue.
What I can tell you is that competition is fierce if you are looking for a pilot job with a major airline, or even a regional job. The consensus I gleaned from the recruiters with whom we have a working relationship is that they have plenty of qualified pilots’ résumés on file. The days of recruiters overturning rocks to find résumés of qualified pilots are gone again—for now.
What does this mean for you? You will need to find a way to stand out among others (and not in a bad way). If you don’t yet have a mentor, find one. If you need that connection, start with Professional Pilots of Tomorrow (PPOT). This organization will connect you with one of their volunteers who has been where you are now and can help you navigate your course. This kind of career networking is just the beginning. Seek out ways you can contribute to the success of your current flight school, airline or charter company. Become a check airman, or top training instructor, or a chief pilot. Find a way to positively distinguish yourself at your current job.
This type of on-the-job accomplishment will help you land your dream job sooner. Continue to network and meet people. Attend aviation career fairs, meet-and-greet events, and any other aviation-related gathering from which you can gain contacts. These connections will help you stand out among others and contribute to your success down the runway of your career.
As with everything, there exists an imaginary line that you don’t want to cross. Don’t stalk recruiters or blow up their inboxes with messages of desperation. Recruiters will attest that this can quickly backfire on you. Be respectful of the recruiters’ positions and efforts.
Lastly, don’t despair because there is hope and help. Consider connecting with the professionals at Aero Crew Solutions who will review your application, polish your résumé, and conduct interview preparation with you. The tips they will provide will guide you toward your dream job.
Fly Safe,
Craig Pieper
