I was back in Austin, Texas and wanted to have a comparison to the king of brisket from Franklins BBQ that I reviewed in the March 2023 issue of Aero Crew News. While asking around for recommendations for a few weeks, I heard about a carnivore's dream come true – the all-you-can-eat barbecue at Salt Lick BBQ in Round Rock, just a short drive from Austin.
Yes, that's right – you heard me correctly. Salt Lick BBQ offers an all-you-can-eat barbecue option on their menu, and let me tell you, it's a meat-lover's paradise. For a fixed price, you enjoy unlimited helpings of ribs, brisket, sausage, and sides. Make sure to bring a friend because you're going to be in this little slice of heaven for a few hours. Luckily, I had my buddy Tim to aid and support me through the slow smoked, perfectly crispy bark of brisket. The ribs and sausage were a great compliment to the brisket, too. The sides are brought to the table family style in large helpings to share with the table. Creamy potato salad, tangy coleslaw, and the sweet baked beans, ensure there is something for everyone. Oh, and I almost forgot about the buttery corn and of course the signature Texas-BBQ-style fluffy white bread. But wait, I want to reiterate that this is an all-you-can-eat portion, so let the meat keep flowing.
I admit, I had poor food management that day but regret to inform you that I missed out on their signature peach cobbler. (I will not make this mistake again.) This delicacy is known to be a sweet, buttery dessert that will have you scraping the bottom of the dish for every last crumb. The waiter was kind enough to let us take some food to go, which was a surprise given that most all-you-can eat places do not allow this. The leftovers heated up perfectly in the aircraft the next day. They were just as if they had been pulled right from the grill.
The atmosphere at Salt Lick BBQ only adds to the experience. The restaurant is housed in a rustic, Texas-style building with long communal tables that encourage diners to sit together and enjoy the feast. There's a lively, sociable atmosphere that makes you feel like you're at a backyard barbecue with friends.
Salt Lick BBQ has several other locations that include in the DFW and AUS airports where you can get a taste of what they have to offer. (These were named to Huffington Post’s list of the ten best airport restaurants!) However, if you are near Round Rock and you have an insatiable appetite for barbecue, you owe it to yourself to visit Salt Lick BBQ and indulge in the all-you-can-eat feast. From the succulent meats to the hearty sides and the welcoming atmosphere, this is a dining experience you won't soon forget.
