New York, NY – TAP Air Portugal, Portugal’s national carrier, continued its significant growth in North American in 2024, carrying a record 1.59 million passengers between North America and Portugal, up 8.9 percent year over year. TAP Air Portugal carried a total of 16.1 million passengers globally in 2024, up 1.6 percent from 2023.
The North American routes are the airline’s fastest growing. Last year was the first time the airline carried more than 1.5 million passengers on the US and Canadian routes, reflecting the largest percentage increase of passengers carried globally.
Routes beyond Portugal to Europe recorded an increase of 0.9 percent, for a total of 8.8 million passengers, consolidating TAP's position as one of the main operators of transatlantic routes, not just to Portugal but to dozens of cities across Europe and Africa.
TAP’s network load factor, or percentage of seats filled, was 82.3 percent, up 1.5 percent from 2023. TAP’s seats (ASK) increased 1.6 percent while revenue per seat (RPK) increased by 3.4 percent.
In 2025, as the airline will celebrate its 80th anniversary of operations, TAP will debut service from Los Angeles, its eighth US gateway and 11th North American gateway. The new LA to Lisbon service will begin in May, along with a new route from Boston to Porto, while flights from San Francisco to Terceira will commence in June.
“It’s so exciting to continue to see TAP grow and attract new North American travelers,” said Carlos Antunes, TAP’s Director for the Americas. “We’re poised to continue that growth in 2025 with new service from Los Angeles, Boston and San Francisco in what will already be a banner year as TAP turns 80 years young.”
Currently TAP flies from seven US gateways at New York, Newark, Boston, Miami, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Chicago. This summer, TAP will offer more than 100 weekly flights from North America, including Toronto and Montreal.
Last month, TAP was named ‘Best Airline in Europe,’ by the readers of Global Traveler Magazine, for the 14th consecutive year, at the 21st Annual GT Tested Reader Survey Awards.
