Dear readers,
As winter subsides and spring bounces in, we are reminded that summer is right around the corner with its severe thunderstorms and convective SIGMETs occurring in certain parts of the country after some areas have received record snow falls this winter. It’s been a while that I recall dodging massive thunderstorms, squall lines, or even isolated thunderstorms. I’m not going to lie, I kind of miss that. The destinations to which I fly have changed, but I feel like there’s been less convective activity over the last two years and perhaps longer.
Other pilots and I have often debated which is the better season to fly in – summer or winter? Do you like the unpredictability that summer brings with air mass thunderstorms, holding and last-minute diversions. Or do you prefer the flying through blizzards, de-icing and dealing with holdover times? Which side of the debate do you land on?
Irrespective of the season, we can all agree that there are many beautiful sights from our windows which has been the inspiration for our annual Aero Crew News Photo Contest. There is still time for you to submit your shots for this year’s theme – Aviation Sunsets. You can win cash and other prizes, plus bragging rights as your photo will be featured in Aero Crew News. See the rules, prizes and submit your photos here.
As always, I welcome comments, questions, or suggestions to improve Aero Crew News! I can be reached at [email protected].
Fly safe,
Craig Pieper
