MEMPHIS—FedEx Express pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), held an informational picket in Memphis in response to FedEx Corporation’s upcoming implementation of “One FedEx” on June 1, 2024. As outlined in a company-issued public document, FedEx described the transition to this realignment strategy as one that will “ultimately bring FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Services, and other FedEx operating companies into Federal Express Corporation, becoming a single company operating a unified, fully integrated air-ground network under the respected FedEx brand.”
Standing shoulder to shoulder in front of FedEx Corporation’s executive headquarters on Shady Grove Road, the pilots demonstrated their frustrations with the lack of a new contract while FedEx management continues making business decisions that impact its employees.
“As FedEx begins its journey to restructure under the ‘One FedEx’ strategy, our pilots remind management that there’s still unfinished business to address in the near term,” said Capt. Jose Nieves, chair of the FedEx ALPA Master Executive Council. “Our negotiations began well ahead of this realignment strategy, and we strongly believe management must resolve outstanding labor disputes to ensure the company’s continued success. Our outdated contract does not reflect the strategic direction of the company nor the standard for commercial airline pilots.”
ALPA and FedEx management began negotiations in May 2021 and entered into mediation in October 2022 with the assistance of the National Mediation Board. Following a rejected tentative agreement in July 2023, the FedEx pilots clearly expressed their requirements for an agreement that would meet their expectations.
“We want to make it clear to FedEx management that they cannot achieve their goals without the support of its employees. These public displays of unity are only going to continue until management recognizes our contributions to the company’s success,” said Nieves.
