Well, April’s Tax Day is behind us and if that isn’t a reminder to keep your life in order, I don’t know what is. As we move into May and as the summer is fast(er) approaching, now is a good time to consider focusing your attention on your goals. Tony Robbins constantly says (among other coaches and influencers), “Where focus goes, energy flows. And where energy flows, whatever you're focusing on grows. In other words, your life is controlled by what you focus on.” That brings me to this month’s food for thought: What are you focusing on?

When it comes to focusing your efforts it becomes vitally important to know what makes up the elements of you and your life. I am a huge fan of the five-pillar model of life: Health, Financial, Family, Work, Play. (Models vary depending on who you research or use as a coach.) Generally speaking, when it comes to the whole-person concept, each element forms the foundation of who you are and creates whatever version of you that exists. Since I am a fitness coach, this article and all of my coaching emphasis focuses on the health pillar. Understand that if you don’t pay attention to an element of your life, that particular pillar will crumble.

When it comes to focusing on health, you probably already have an idea of what to do. Eat less, move more. Often, just like creating and following a budget, you know you should do it, but if you pay semi-attention (which means little too none) you won’t find success. You must have a very measured approach to achieve your goals. That means, right down what you are doing, what you are eating, and what your 90-day or 180-day goals looks like.

I watched an interesting YouTube video from Codie Sanchez. She basically said, if you want to get healthy, then clean up your eating habits and clean up or change you work-out habits. She was essentially riffing off the clean your bedroom idea. What focus comes down to is narrow your attention onto the specific pillar necessary in order to build yourself a solid foundation. You can do the same thing on other areas of your life too. Drive your attention to the individual areas of your life and make it a point to circle back on each area throughout the year. You cannot focus on only one area or spend all your energy on one pillar.

As always, when it comes to your health, it’s up to you to create a goal and follow through. It doesn’t mean you have to go full-on bodybuilder or fitness influencer, just move more and eat less. Find something you like and do it consistently.

As always, you can seek additional guidance from health professionals, wellness coaches and trainers. Come back each month for more areas to help you in your journey. I invite you to reach me at for ideas on how to create a goal or with suggestions for areas you’d like addressed in this space.
