In a world where career paths often diverge between generations, Gregory and Aiyden Waddoups stand out as a powerful example of shared dreams, mutual inspiration and a passion for aviation that bridges both age and experience.

From heavy machinery and hospital corridors to high-altitude ambitions, this father-son team is proving that it’s never too early—or too late—to pursue your dream of flying.

From Labor to Lift-Off: Aiyden’s Journey

Aiyden, a 2022 graduate of Graham-Kapowsin High School in Washington State, knew from an early age that the sky held something more than just clouds. After spending time operating heavy equipment as a lead laborer, Aiyden decided it was time to pivot. Encouraged by his father, Gregory, and inspired by a vision of life in the flight deck, he spent two years saving before applying to United Aviate Academy (UAA), United Airlines’ wholly owned flight school located in Goodyear, Ariz.

“The Academy has been an incredible experience,” Aiyden shared. “It’s challenging, for sure. The training is immersive and fast-paced, it really keeps you sharp.”

He quickly realized that success in the program required full commitment: “This is a 24/7 experience. You have to stay focused and constantly direct your time and energy to the right areas.”

Now deep into his training, Aiyden is on a secured path toward a commercial pilot seat—with United as the ultimate destination.

From Nursing to Navigation: Gregory’s Leap

For Gregory, the path to aviation was not as direct. A former registered nurse specializing in renal failure, Gregory spent years in clinical care before deciding to follow his long-held dream of flying.

A conversation with a pilot friend reawakened that passion, Gregory recalls. That encouragement led him to UAA, where he found a training environment that perfectly matched his ambitions.

“As someone coming into aviation later in life, I was looking for a structured program,” he explained. “The opportunity of earning all my ratings in one place really appealed to me. And the fact that it’s tied to United—my dream airline—made it the perfect fit.”

While the program is intense, Gregory finds strength in perspective. “One of the biggest takeaways is realizing this is my journey and no one else’s. It’s easy to fall into comparison, especially during stressful phases of training, but everyone’s path is different.”

Flying Forward, Together

Both father and son are navigating the highs and lows of flight training side-by-side. Though their professional backgrounds differ, their shared journey has strengthened their bond, with mutual support and pride fueling every step of their flight training.

Whether it’s Aiyden’s early ambition or Gregory’s bold reinvention, the Waddoups’ story is a testament to persistence, legacy, and the power of family. Together, they’re not just learning to fly—they’re writing a story that proves the sky isn’t the limit, but only the beginning.

“Watching Aiyden chase his dream with such discipline and passion makes me incredibly proud as a father,” says Gregory.

“Getting to experience this with my dad is something I’ll cherish forever,” Aiyden adds. “We’re literally learning to fly together. How many people get to say that?”
