Dear Readers,
One of the greatest privileges of a career in aviation is something we sometimes take for granted: the ability to experience the world in ways most people only dream about. Whether it’s a quick overnight in a new city or a well-earned stretch of vacation, our profession opens doors to adventure, discovery, and perspective that extend far beyond the flight deck or cabin.
Recently, I had the opportunity to spend some time in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands—a destination that, like many others we visit, reminds me why this career is unique. Getting there wasn’t exactly straightforward, as there are no direct flights from Newark, which meant a bit of creativity and patience in the journey. But as we all know, sometimes the best destinations require a little extra effort—and they’re almost always worth it.
One of the highlights of the trip was scuba diving off the Frederiksted Pier, a spot that consistently ranks among the Caribbean’s unique dive sites. Descending beneath the surface, it quickly became clear why. The marine life was nothing short of incredible. We encountered sea turtles gliding effortlessly through the water, delicate seahorses tucked among the pilings, a massive school of tarpon moving in unison, and even spider crabs and flounder blending seamlessly into their surroundings. It was a vivid reminder of how much there is to explore beneath the surface—both literally and figuratively.
I had hoped to dive the famous wall as well, but with only ten days on the island, there simply wasn’t enough time to do everything. And maybe that’s part of the lesson too. Even with the travel benefits we enjoy, there’s always more to see, more to experience, and more reasons to come back.
As crew, we occupy a unique space where work and adventure often intersect. We have the opportunity not only to connect people across the globe but also to immerse ourselves in the cultures, landscapes, and moments that make each destination special. Whether it’s a planned vacation or an unexpected layover discovery, these experiences enrich both our personal and professional lives.
I encourage all of you to take advantage of these opportunities whenever you can. Step off the beaten path, try something new, and embrace the experiences that come with this incredible career.
