The Air Line Pilots Association has requested federal mediation in contract negotiations with Breeze Airways, a sign that direct talks between the carrier and its roughly 750 pilots have hit an impasse.

Federal mediation under the Railway Labor Act means the National Mediation Board gets involved to facilitate talks. Until the NMB either brokers an agreement or releases the parties — a process that can take years — pilots cannot legally strike and the carrier cannot impose terms unilaterally. For Breeze pilots, the move extends the timeline to a contract but also applies formal pressure to both sides.

Breeze Airways issued a statement in response to the union’s mediation request. The contents of that statement were not available in the source material reviewed for this report.
