A pilot died Thursday morning when a Weatherly 620B went down in a field near Lynchburg, South Carolina, the FAA confirmed.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office received the call for a crash in the area of Red Top Road. The FAA placed the accident time at approximately 8:15 a.m. The pilot was the sole occupant.
The Weatherly 620B is a purpose-built agricultural aircraft used for aerial application — crop dusting. Officials confirmed that was the plane's intended use.
The victim's name has not been released.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office, EMS, fire department, and coroner's office all responded. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. No cause has been determined.
The NTSB investigation will produce a preliminary report typically within a few weeks, with a full probable cause determination to follow.
