Update: The FAA has now cleared Boeing’s 737 Max software glitch as not a safety issue. Read more about the latest MAX 10 status: https://aerocrewnews.com/w4yq
The FAA is withholding type certification for the Boeing 737 MAX 10 after a software issue surfaced in the final stages of the approval process, Administrator Bryan Bedford said Monday at an event near Washington.
Bedford told reporters the agency will not move forward until it determines whether the flagged software concern constitutes a safety-of-flight issue. No timeline was given.
The MAX 10 is the largest variant of Boeing’s 737 family. Certification has already been a prolonged process, and the new hold comes as Boeing was approaching the finish line for delivery approvals.
For carriers that have MAX 10s on order — United and Delta among the largest U.S. customers — continued certification delays push back entry-of-service dates, which affects crew training pipelines, base planning, and fleet transition schedules. Until the FAA resolves the software question, none of those aircraft can be delivered.
